DESCRIPTION The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking candidates for the position of Affirmative Action Specialist Trainee within the Division of Civil Rights & Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action Specialist Trainees are assigned a 35 – hour work week. Current starting salary is $45,731 and after six months is $47,810. As a NJ State Department, NJDOT offers a comprehensive benefits package including Health Care (medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision care), Pension, Deferred Compensation, 12 paid holidays, and Benefit Leave (12 vacation days, 15 sick days, and 3 administrative days).
The Division of Civil Rights and Affirmative Action (DCR/AA) is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing and overseeing the implementation and overall efficiency/effectiveness of the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s internal and external Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Programs which include diversity and inclusion.
The Affirmative Action Specialist Trainee will receive on the job training while working closely with a more experienced staff member or supervisor in the DCR/AA, and will be involved in and ultimately responsible for a wide variety of the division’s internal and external work to include, but not be limited to the following: Reviewing and analyzing staff transactions and trends; counseling employees and providing training and technical assistance on Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Nondiscrimination; providing the support necessary to complete comprehensive or follow – up reviews of the department’s special emphasis program areas as well as its sub – recipients of USDOT/Federal funds to ensure compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights of 1964, Environmental Justice (EJ), Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as appropriate; assisting in the execution of detailed, checklist, and/or follow – up reviews and inspections of the department’s consultant and construction contractors to ensure that they are complying with Federal and State Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action (EEO/AA) contractual requirements on all department contracts/projects statewide; reviewing contractors’ certified payrolls to confirm compliance with the Davis Bacon Act and payment of prevailing wage rates; and preparing memorandums, letters, and narrative and statistical reports that provide a written account of reviews and investigations. REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited college or University with a Bachelor’s degree.

Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14 – 7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act.”
